The story of A Red Moon in August
In August 2007 the moon turned red across skies in New Zealand for about an hour. The phenomenon is known as a blood moon and sometimes happens during a lunar eclipse when the earth passes between the moon and the sun. The event inspired this fantastical, dreamlike work from Sofia, which also features a ballerina dancing across the clouds and a couple of ruru or native New Zealand owls. The ruru is a Maori spiritual symbol of tapu (sacredness), guardianship, forewarning, grief and awareness.
