The story of Between Earth and Heavens
"Between Earth and Heavens" celebrates the ancient Maori creation myth. The title refers to our lives existing in the realm between Papatuanuku (Mother Earth) and Ranginui (Sky Father). Legend tells that their separation long ago gave Tanemahuta, their strongest divine son, and his brothers the freedom to prosper. However it is their enduring love that will hold mankind and the natural world in an embrace forever. The composition was originally inspired by Boticelli's equally mythological painting 'Venus and Mars'. There are mamaku (black tree ferns) to the left with the nude figure of Papatuanuku. To the right are two huia birds and soaring pouakai eagles, both of which are extinct native species and in this work represent the divine sky father Ranginui.
