The story of Extinction I
In "Extinction I" a majestic Pouakai (Haast eagle) dangles our planet earth and perhaps its fate, above a purple tulip. The native New Zealand eagle, which had a wingspan of up to 3 metres went extinct in 1400AD. This painting could be seen as depicting what Sofia terms an "earth flower", which conceptually explores the Gaia hypothesis. This theory proposes that the earth's ecology is a complex interacting system of living and non-living parts that can be thought of as a single organism.
