The story of I Stole a Red Pencil
As with the painting "Emerald Shores", this is a playful and significant departure from Sofia's other works. "I Stole a Red Pencil" shows that her painting direction is constantly evolving and remaining fresh with an element of experimentation. This simple still life "is what it is" says the artist. Sparked by an actual incident in her youth in which she shoplifted a sizeable red pencil from a homeware store, Sofia explains "one can read into an artwork like this as one wishes. It really should just be about the viewer's liking (or disliking!) of the subject matter, title, painting technique and the essence of the piece". "This was a spontaneous painting. It was fun. And it dredges up one of those random childhood memories that I thought would be better shared with the world."
