The story of Newborn Kōwhai
This painting of two kōwhai flowers glowing in the shade of blue commemorates the birth of Sofia's first nephew. Following Māori custom, the child's placenta or whenua has been buried in a significant place, in this case at the base of a kōwhai tree in the family garden. This practice reinforces the relationship between the newborn child and the land of their birth.
