The story of Putiputi
The painting "Putiputi" is a surreal view of Rangitoto as seen from Okahu Bay in Auckland. Sofia being an Aucklander sees this view nearly every day and finds herself enchanted by the ancient volcanic island of Rangitoto lying dormant in Auckland's busy Hauraki Gulf. It alludes to another time and place, without yachts, ferries, speed boats and people. The contradiction of old and new inspired the artist to depict the familiar seascape in a dreamlike and primordial way. There is no hint of human habitation and the native birds and plants reign. A tui shares the viewers' gaze toward the horizon and two soaring albatross. Tiny red karaka berries dangle from an unusual fern plant, which also sprouts off into yellow kowhai flowers and a large red kaka beak flower.
