The story of Reclining Buddha
This painting of the enormous Reclining Buddha statue at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, was painted with oil and acrylic on board.
Galyhare, also known as the Cave of the Spirits of Knowledge is an outdoor rock wall in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, where giant standing and reclining sculptures of the Buddha were carved out of the rock face during the reign of a twelfth century king - a huge task, when one considers it was accomplished with nothing but manual labour. The most imposing statue measuring 46 feet in length is the Reclining Buddha depicted in this painting. The Buddha is seen in the last moment of his life on earth, on the verge of entering nirvana.
