The story of Road to Tanemahuta
"Road to Tanemahuta" is a surreal oil painting of an urban, concreted wall as the site for moments of living whakapapa or genealogy. Separation and connection are both represented here in a yin/yang balance or tension.
Our wairua or spirit is present in the birds. A kereru flies towards a sleek wooden manaia carving, where two huia birds perch.
There is a sense that even if we concrete over our environment, we are forever indivisible from the natural world.
An excerpt from Māori natural lore:
"I have taken their lives to sustain my own. They have fed upon the flesh of my kin to sustain theirs. I have prayed to their common ancestor to keep us at peace. He has answered my call and kept them bountiful. Our whakapapa is entwined. Their lives are entwined. Our destinies are entwined. You are the forest. I shall protect you. Tāne shall be my guide."
