The story of Serendib
Long ago Muslim traders talked of Sri Lanka as the island of Serendib, from which was derived the word serendipity (meaning fortunate accident). Having lived in Sri Lanka for three years while I was growing up, I was deeply troubled by the the devistating Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Since then however, I have also been touched by stories of hope, survival and unbelievable luck despite the odds. The girl in this painting is a child of Serendib and to me, she embodies the spirit of serendipity.
