The story of Tauihu
Tauihu is the bow piece of a canoe. Of all the different types of Maori canoes, waka taua are the largest and most ornately adorned and carved. They are sometimes referred to as waka pitau, which describes the perforated, spiral carving that supports the carved figurehead in the tauihu.
This painting depicts the carved spiral designs of a bow piece made of wood that has become ancient and weathered. On closer inspection there are also vines weaving their way through the spirals with bright red Karaka berries dangling in bunches. A glowing pink sky and coastal horizon peaks through the carved tauihu and together, the elements of this work suggest a mysterious ocean voyage from long ago.
