The story of Whenua Africa
In 2009 the New Zealand All Whites qualified for the Soccer World Cup and in this painting Sofia's thoughts turn to a great uniting of cultures in 2010 in South Africa. Here she explores a surreal African land or 'whenua', a true cradle of mankind, mother to not only today's African flora and fauna but in this case also to native species of Aotearoa.
A Moa stands under an African tree, two extinct Pouakai Eagles soar in the sky above and a prehistoric looking Kaka Beak Flower unfolds in the foreground. What a sight it will be during the Fifa World Cup, with so many nations celebrating the game of football and their own cultural identities. While they are coming together on African soil for the ultimate sporting competition, may it also be a time to enhance a greater sense of global unity.
