The story of Hikurangi

Sofia descends from the East Cape iwi of Ngati Porou and Hikurangi is their sacred mountain.

Land and ancestral connections are deeply significant for Ngati Porou as shown in the ancient proverb of identity "ko Hikurangi te maunga, ko Waiapu te awa, ko Ngati Porou te iwi" meaning "Hikurangi is the mountain, Waiapu is the river, Ngati Porou are the people."

Sofia was inspired to depict Hikurangi in this simple, proud way, because the mountain is considered by Ngati Porou to be the first land to have risen out of the ocean when Maui, the infamous Polynesian demi-god, fished up the North Island of New Zealand. In this work it is as though the pouakai eagle (a native eagle with a wingspan of 3 metres that went extinct c.1400 AD) is circling and welcoming the newly risen mountain.
