The story of Hikurangi Nebula

This painting describes what cannot be seen by the eye - Sofia's imaginings - inspired by the powerful cosmology, history and land of Aotearoa. The mountain depicted is Hikurangi, the sacred maunga of Sofia's Ngati Porou iwi. An extinct Pouakai Eagle glides to the right of the mountain and the vision of a surreal cosmological nebula shines above. The present, past, infinite and impossible exist together in a realm where the mind and stroke of a brush provide the possibility.
